Hello everyone, and welcome back to my blog! Today I am reviewing Pioneer Park in Covington, Kentucky. I pass by this park every day on my drive to school and enjoy looking at the river as I drive by. I had been once previously, but I was excited to check the park out more and see what it had to offer.
Favorite aspect of the park
My favorite feature was the river running throughout the park. The walking path that goes around the park follows closely next to the river, almost always in sight. Several bridges cross over the water and are perfect for looking at the birds and other wildlife that spend time in the water. There are also several paths leading down to the water if you wanted to let your dog or children play in it. During the warmer months, there are also various wildflowers lining the banks that are always a pleasant sight. As I was walking back to my car, I noticed the sunlight reflecting off the water and making it sparkle, which added to the park's overall beauty.
Least favorite aspect of the park
My least favorite aspect of the park was the flooding issues. Flooding, of course, is not something that those in charge of the park have much control over, but it is unfortunate, nonetheless. Because the walking paths are so close to the water, there is significant damage when the river does flood. Whether it be dirt and mud covering walking paths, trash washing up onto the banks, and even in one place washing out the walking path altogether. It can be an eyesore and a hindrance to those using the walking trails.
Something that stood out to me
The road borders one side of the park, but on the other side is an active railroad! No trains passed by me on my walk, but I imagine it would be pretty cool for those interested in trains to be able to see them up close and personal. I think this park does a great job of integrating into its surroundings. It sandwiched nicely between the road and the railroad but still manages to provide that little bit of a natural escape. The meandering river and accompanying walking paths are a great way to get active even in a reasonably urban setting.
Final thoughts
Overall, I think this is a great park with lots to offer. There are soccer, baseball, and other sports fields, pavilions for activities, a playground, benches for relaxing, and a paved walking path for easy accessibility. The river, in my opinion, is what sells the park for me. I can't resist the sound of a bubbling stream as I walk in nature, and especially watching it sparkle in the sunlight makes it enjoyable. My most extensive critique of the park would be that it is very susceptible to flooding, covering the walking paths and heavily saturate the ground.
Photos in order: geese, some pretty yellow flowers along the walking path, the playground from across the river, cool textures of tree bark, a squirrel friend, view of the walking path, a little blue flower, geese, geese, more geese (they hissed at me), another view of the river.
